Natural Latex supplied in 25 kilogram kegs. Used to bind the yarn tufts to the primary backing and stick the secondary backing to the primary backing. |
This page is being developed to provide information for hand tufters to produce rugs, carpets and wall hangings.
Latex is used on the back of the tufted carpet to seal the tufts to the primary backing. Latex is also used to stick the secondary backing to the primary backing fabric. The Latex offered is a natural Latex product which is miscible but not soluble in water.
Primary backing fabric is the fabric that is tufted into using a hand tufting gun. This fabric must be strong and have the required degree of elasticity to allow the needle to penetrate the fabric, then retract to hold the yarn when the needle is withdrawn leaving the loop or cut pile trapped.
Secondary backing is applied after the tufting process and its function is largely aesthetic. The secondary backing is bonded to the tufted primary backing using latex.
